About The Workshop

The workshop “Empowering women in STEM: Bridging the opportunities in Jammu and Kashmir’ is being organized by University of Kashmir, with Dr. Riffat John (convener) and Prof. Aijaz Ahmad Wani (co-convener) from the Department of Botany. This unique workshop for women aims:
1 To foster scientific collaboration among scientists from the UT of Jammu and Kashmir and other national/state institutes and universities.
2 To apprise students about emerging roles of women in the growing scientific enterprise and to raise awareness about career options in STEM.
3 To develop mentor and mentee linkages between UG/PG students and scientist across India.
4 To sensitize our young women scientists and students about the latest advances in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and innovations.
5 The workshop is open to all, regardless of gender.

About The University

The University of Kashmir, located at Hazratbal, Srinagar is flanked by the world-famous Dal Lake on the east and Nigeen Lake on the west, under the foothills of Zabarwan Mountains and alongside the holy Hazratbal Shrine. The University’s main Campus, which covers 247 acres, is separated into three parts: Hazratbal Campus, Naseem bagh campus, and Mirza Bagh Cmapus (the later serving for residential purpose), besides having three satellite campuses (North campus, south campus and Kupwara campus). About The Department

The Department of Botany’s modest seed, planted in 1961 and nurtured by renowned botanists, scientists and naturalists, has grown into a massive tree, its branches bursting with blooms of scholarship and dispersing fruits of excellence. The Department has undertaken research projects in the areas of ecology, plant pathology, medicinal plant biology, taxonomy, cytogenetics, biodiversity, molecular biology for which it has received generous funding from Government funding agencies like UGC, DBT, DST, CSIR, MOEF, etc. Many of the faculty members have active collaborations with scientists from Institutes in or outside India.

About The City

The city has great attractions where people can visit during their stay in Kashmir. These include the Srinagar city that is located on the banks of the river Jehlum with several attractive places like the Dal lake, Nigeen lake, house boats, Mughal gardens (Nishat, Shalimar, Chasheme Shahi, Pari Mahal, Tulip garden, Botanical garden etc). Submission Of Abstracts

To participate in the workshop, you need to first register yourself on the online portal. Following steps are needed for the registration:
1. Create a user account by clicking on registration.
2. After login into your account, you will have to pay the fees to be able to participate in the Workshop.
3. You can submit your abstract along with the relevant details in the portal. One (first) author can submit only one abstract.
4. Registration and abstract acceptance will be confirmed after the submission of the fees.

Awards

During the workshop, students will have a unique opportunity to present their work. Based on the abstracts, students will be shortlisted for flash talks and poster presentations. Awards will be given to the ones who have the best posters and talks.

Accommodation

the invited speakers and invited guests, who plan to attend this workshop will be provided accommodation in the University guest house. The famous Dal Lake and Dargah shrine are at a walking distance from the University campus.

Accompanied Guests

Guests are welcome to bring their family members along with them. They will be charged extra for the accompanying member or can book their accommodation in the nearby hotels.
